Executive Director, Bridging The Gap
Bridging The Gap (BTG) is a non-profit organization that works to make the Kansas City region sustainable by connecting environment, economy and community. Bridging The Gap seeks to educate citizens, businesses and government on the impact of decisions and behavior on our present and future community and world.
Responsibilities:
The Executive Director of Bridging The Gap is a highly responsible executive position, requiring abilities in leadership, supervision, planning, fund development and public relations. This position oversees the creation and direction of an expanding array of programs, including Keep Kansas City Beautiful, Kansas City WildLands, Heartland Tree Alliance, Environmental Excellence Business Network, Business Consulting Services, By-Product Synergy, Community Recycling Centers, Walking School Bus, Five Green Things, and Shadowcliff Retreat Center (see www.bridgingthegap.org for more information).
- Provide the organization with vision and focus. Keep a firm grasp on mission, set clear objectives and measures, monitor process, progress and results appropriately. Stay abreast of environmental issues and identify new trends and opportunities; determine how Bridging The Gap can best be positioned, compared with other similar organizations, to address opportunities effectively.
- Oversee and ensure prudent financial management using best practices for not for profits, including cash flow, relevant ratios, program funding, and long-term financial health of the organization. Oversee the preparation of an annual budget and provide regular income and expense reports to Board of Directors.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. Utilize leadership, team building, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to build consensus within BTG and externally in community partnerships. Create a positive working environment to attract, motivate, and retain talented staff members; honor diversity goals in hiring and partnering. Ensure that volunteering at Bridging The Gap continues to be a positive and mutually beneficial relationship for the thousands of volunteers who engage with BTG yearly.
- Acts as the principal liaison and representative for the organization in the Kansas City community. Collaborate with community partners to promote the principles of BTG, identify how public and private organizations operate within the community and accomplish effective community engagements. Identify community assets and available resources and communicate the role of BTG with public and private partners in environmental sustainability.
- Lead the development of a robust fund development program, building a strong organization reaching out to many partners in the regional community; provide good value for funders’ investment, and nurture funding relationships over the long term.

Qualifications - Preferred qualifications include:
- Postgraduate degree from an accredited college or university
- A minimum of five years of experience in non-profit management/supervisory experience at a senior level, including the related administration, personnel, program, budgetary and financial matters
- A proven track record in strengthening and improving an organization and leading it to a high level of accomplishment; possessing the vision, work ethic and perseverance necessary to do so over the long term
- Knowledge, expertise and a strong track record in fund development and in raising funds for administration and specialized programming over both the short and long term
- Expertise in environmental and sustainability issues on the global, national and regional levels. Understanding of the interrelationship of the environment, the economy and the community; commitment to environmental restoration
- Exceptional people/relationship development skills and organizational skills, along with excellent grammar and written composition skills
